Dr. Vera Tarman joins us today to talk about addiction and mainly her work with food addictions.
Dr. Vera Tarman is the author Food Junkies: The Truth about Food Addiction and runs the website Addictions Unplugged.
Roughly 70% of Americans are overweight or obese. It’s a pretty safe bet to say that of that group of overweight poeple, a very high percentage of them have food addictions.
It’s highly probably that perhaps 50% of Americans are addicted to food in some way.
The foods that are most often the culprits are new foods. These are foods that have been created in a factory with a specific intention in mind, to keep you consuming them and they eventually make you sick.
Then when you get diagnosed with a particular illness or disease like cancer, they make money off of your sickness. You being healthy is not a part of the equation from their business perspective. They only make money off of you if you’re not healthy.
The foods that are the most addictive seem to be processed wheat, sugar and carbohydrates. They feed yeast, fungus, candida and parasites that are robbing your body of nutrition.
When we’re craving sugary foods like this, most likely it’s the harmful organisms in our gut that are craving those foods, not even us.
A good diet to look into in this regard is The Body Ecology diet and Sara Wilson’s I Quit Sugar program.

Vera Tarman
Dr Vera Tarman has been working in the field of addiction medicine since 1994. She became accredited with the Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) in 2004. She has been the medical director of Renascent since 2006. She is a regular contributor to the call-in TV show Living Clean, Living Well and was cohost on Addictions Unplugged, a community call-in show about addictions.
