How To Let Go Of Attachments To Accomplishing Goals

mistakes in setting goalsDo you feel like you’re never “accomplishing” enough? Do you see your friends passing you by in life? Maybe your friends are married, have children or maybe even more successful financially than you.

Do you look around and feel like everybody has it together except you?

You think you need “to do” so much more. So you start setting goals and writing lists and yet each day that goes by you realize that you’re only accomplishing maybe half of what’s on your to do list.

The most important items on your to do list (the ones that are going to be making you go in the direction of your dreams) seem to be the ones that you keep failing to do each day.

Why is that?

You end up beating yourself up incessantly because of it.

You know you should have carved time out of your day to do call that person related to that new project but you didn’t. You knew you were supposed to write up that proposal but you were too tired and decided to watch TV instead.

In the back of your mind you’re kicking yourself and beating yourself up for all the things that you “could have” done but didn’t. You know that you can’t accomplish your goals and dreams in life if you don’t get done certain key tasks each day.

We talked about this concept a lot on our last Free For All Friday show where we discussed the idea of attaching ourselves to the desired outcome from achieving a goal.

Goals are great and achieving your dream is even better. But the trap that we fall into is how we think about those certain goals. We think inherently that somehow we aren’t good enough if we don’t accomplish our goals.

It’s All About Fear

These are all based on fear (False Evidence Appearing Real) from what other people might think. What will my friends or family think if they see that I went for my dream and failed again? What will my parents think of me quitting school to follow my passion by giving me a loan and having it not work out?

These are all fears and legitimate concerns.

We’re so attached to accomplishing things and marking items off our daily to do list, that we forget to freakin live.

We think that we can only be happy when we finally build that business, or earn a lot of money or anything else. We forget that we already have so much to be thankful for (and happy about), but we’re too busy comparing ourselves to others and complaining about everything we don’t have.

It’s sickening to see.

If you’re somebody who is a go getter like me (we ought to be go givers because those who make it their aim to get, always fail) you focus on getting things done but it’s incredibly important to not have any attachment to what we complete in our lives.

Tell yourself this mantra each night before you go to bed, “I’m only one person. I didn’t waste any time today and I’m doing the best that I can.”

This is incredibly powerful and has worked wonders for me. It helps you to let go of how much you can do in a day. It helps you to focus more on the big reason why you’re doing what you’re doing instead of focusing on all the smaller tasks.

It gives you an opportunity to forgive yourself. It allows you to let go of any attachment to accomplishing goals.

If your heart is in the right place, and you truly want to help people and work hard at it every single day, it doesn’t matter if you check off all 10 items on your list or only check off 5, you will reach your goal in the perfect time. Not a day too early or a day too late.

All in due time…

Remember,

“I’m only one person. I didn’t waste any time today and I’m doing the best that I can.”
