1 Weird Trick To Motivate Yourself Towards Making Healthy Changes In Your Life

tumblr_m8i2ijPkE71rywz9qo1_400Over the years I’ve found that some people get really inspired and motivated to get into healthy living and then it fades after a certain amount of time. It’s really strange.

My inclination is that it has to do with people wanting to make a shift because of some physical or cosmetic change they want to make in their lives. Perhaps they want to lose a bit of belly fat or shed a few inches around the waist.

Those people are the ones who are always yo-yo dieting. They’re doing these incredibly difficult things like 30 day juice fasts and then you see them 6 months later chowing down on a hamburger at the local fast food restaurant.

But that’s now what I’m talking about in this particular article.

I’m talking to you guys who are really struggling with motivation and you really want to make positive changes in your life. You know who you are. You’re the ones who are level headed, calculated and really want to take the slow and steady approach to changing your diet and thus changing your life.

The biggest thing that has helped me to change my diet and therefore my life has been the subtraction by addition principle. That means you subtract foods from your diet by adding good food in. I’ll expand more on this principle later.

The second biggest motivating factor for me in terms of making long term changes is the idea of the “30 year end point”

What does this mean you say?

Well the idea is to ask yourself how much of a particular substance (healthy or not) would you end up eating over a 30 year period.

For example right now an average american consumes 22 teaspoons each day. That adds up to roughly 68 pounds of sugar per year. Now if you multiply 68 times 30 you’ll come up with an alarming number.

That equals about 2,040 pounds of sugar!

That means in 30 years you’ll consume about as much sugar as an average car weighs.

Ask yourself how is my liver, pancreas and digestive system going to deal with over 2,000 pounds of sugar? Well in reality it’s not. So you’re going to end up with diseases like cancer, heart attacks (caused by inflammation) and diabetes.

Doesn’t sound too fun to put that much stress on your body does it?

On the flip side of the equation you can start adding daily disciplines into your life like doing 10 minutes of meditation or 10 minutes of qigong or rebounding. I like to sit in the sauna for 30 minutes a day.

You can run the same calculation for all the good and healthy things you can start adding to your life and quickly see how success is measured over a long period of time.

The small things really do add up!

So next time you’re tempted to eat that processed cake or ice cream, ask yourself how much of that you’ve already consumed in your life. Think about how many health conditions you wouldn’t have right now had you never had cake or ice cream for your whole life leading up to right now.

It’s a strange way of looking at food but it’s a motivating way to think about eating for me.
