Today we spoke with Dr. Dominic D’Agostino about the health benefits of the ketogenic diet. For those that are unfamiliar, the keto diet is a high fat, moderate to low protein and low carbohydrate diet.
It’s kind of similar to the paleo diet or the Atkins diet but with more modifications.
There are so many amazing ways to get healthy fats into your nutrition and diet plan today. For example here are some fats that I consume…coconut oil, coconut butter, ghee, raw butter, avocados, nuts and seeds, fatty fish like salmon, almond and cashew butter (there are many nut and seed butters that are amazing these days), beef tallows, duck fat, cacao butter and more. I have a bunch of healthy fats on display here.
Lots of research has been going on with how the ketogenic diet effects health challenges like cancer, hormone regulation, seizures and epilepsy, neurological disorders, multiple sclerosis, exercise recovery, cancer prevention, cancer treatment, improved sleep, better move, lowered depression, weight loss, diabetes, increased sex drive, lowering inflammation and the list literally goes on and on and on.
Sounds too good to be true right? Dr. Dominic D’Agostino sheds the light of science on exactly why this is happening for people. If you weren’t motivated to give the ketogenic diet a try, you will after listening to what Dr. Dom has to say. It’s quite fascinating to say the least.
How could a simple thing like a ketogenic diet do all that? Well it has to to with what our bodies use for fuel or energy. If you can train it to use fat and ketones instead of sugar or glucose, you can almost change your phenotypic expression.

Do you ever have something that just resonates with you? I have that same feeling with eating raw meat and the ketogenic diet. Actually what I will do one day is follow a ketogenic diet but the meat that I eat will be raw.
It think my body would really like that. It seems to make the most sense.

Dr. Dominic “Dom” D’Agostino is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, and a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC).
He has also deadlifted 500 pounds for 10 reps after a seven-day fast.
